The history of VOLVO CE
As early as 1832, Johan Theofron Munktell founded his own engineering workshop in the town of Eskilstuna, and as early as 1853 he produced Sweden’s first steam locomotive there. The next decades were also marked by success. In 1906, before construction machinery could even take a major place in the construction industry, Munktell built his own steam-powered road roller. The starting signal for a glorious future. In 1932, the company merges with Bolinder, which was involved in the manufacture of the world’s first submarine in 1880. In 1950, VOLVO finally bought AB Bolinder-Munktell and from then on always developed new construction machinery.
With the later acquisitions of companies such as Ingersoll Rand, ABG, Lingong or also Champion Road Machinery, VOLVO CE can serve further fields and thus also include excavators, graders and wheel loaders in its range.
This prepared the company for constant growth and today VOLVO Construction Equipment is one of the largest construction equipment manufacturers in the world with approximately 100,000 employees. But not only the own fleet has been constantly expanded, the company has always focused on innovation and visionary concepts. Be it to produce more environmentally friendly machines, such as with the testing of a hydrogen-powered articulated dump truck or the research of hybrid wheel loaders, or to make the work even safer for the operator, as already happened in 1972 when VOLVO CE introduced their ROPS-certified cabs.
Today, VOLVO CE is the largest producer of battery-powered machines, such as the 23-ton EC230 Electric, which is available in select markets.
VOLVO Construction Equipment’s product line currently ranges from mini excavators, mining excavators, skid steer loaders, wheel loaders to pavers, rollers and articulated dump trucks.
